Missouri Healthcare-Associated Infection
Reporting System (MHIRS)
Welcome to the MHIRS website. This site has been developed
to provide information to healthcare providers on the Missouri Department
of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) reporting requirements for
healthcare-associated infections. With the passage of the Missouri
Nosocomial Infection Control Act of 2004, hospitals and ambulatory
surgery centers are required to report healthcare-associated infections
to the DHSS. (For additional information on the statute and related
rules, see Laws, Regulations and Manuals.)
Facilities may choose to report their data directly
to the DHSS, using the MHIRS website application, or through the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Healthcare
Safety Network (NHSN). Regardless of the reporting method,
the healthcare facility must log on to the MHIRS registration site
and complete a registration form.
MHIRS Registration Login
To access the MHIRS registration form, the healthcare facility must
log on to the registration site. The login screen will prompt you
to select your facility name and to enter your password. The password
for the MHIRS registration has been mailed to each facility administrator.
Registration Form Instructions and Information
Once you have logged on to the MHIRS registration website, a screen
will appear with your facility name and address information. You
can then proceed to complete the registration form. Please
note: An asterisk indicates a required data field.
- Contact Information:
- Primary Contact: this should be the
person you want the DHSS to contact regarding infection data
reporting issues and requirements.
- Secondary Contact: this is the person you want the
DHSS to contact in the event the Primary Contact is unavailable.
- Reporting Method
- DHSS System (MHIRS) - hospital data
will be reported directly to the DHSS. The DHSS system is
less sophisticated than the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention's (CDC) system. It is designed to capture the
minimal data elements needed to calculate infection rates
and will not provide the analytic capability available in
the CDC system to assist hospitals with understanding and
reducing infections.
- CDC National Healthcare Safety Network
(NHSN) System - hospital data will be reported directly to
the NHSN. Methods will be devised to extract data that is
required by Missouri law. The NHSN is a very sophisticated
system and allows hospitals to do in-depth analysis of their
data and to benchmark their results against peer group and
national data.
- Undecided at this time - mark this response
if your facility has not yet determined which reporting system
will be used.
- Intensive Care Units
- Definitions for ICU, NICU, central line,
ventilator, central line days and ventilator days are embedded
in the registration form for easy reference.
- Surgeries
- Descriptions for the surgery reporting
categories, along with ICD-9-CM codes, are embedded in the
registration form for easy reference.
