Overview
The class provides an overview of the functionality of GIS, providing some examples of how GIS is currently being used, and information about the various types of GIS software available at DHSS. This short course was designed for anyone who are interested in finding out more about GIS, without committing to the full day Introduction to GIS in Public Health course. Class size is limited to 20.
Audience
This class is for management who are new to GIS and wish to know more about it.

- Potential new GIS projects
- Types of analysis available using GIS
Prerequisites and Recommendations:
A basic understanding of the current types of data used for analysis is helpful.
Introduction to GIS in Public Health (all day course)
Overview
This course covers some of the GIS projects that have been completed at DHSS. Fundamental GIS concepts are discussed, and the participant is introduced to ArcGIS. Basic skills using this program are covered. Courses are offered monthly. This course is taught using the GIS software, ArcView. Maximum class size is 10, pre-registration is required, course is free to DHSS employees and their contracting entities.
Audience
This class is for users who are ready to learn the specifics of how the GIS software works. This class is most effective when the user has purchased or is in the process of purchasing the GIS software, ArcGIS.

- Basic concepts of GIS
- Previewing GIS data
- Loading geographic data for maps and analysis
- Review and editing of data to make it ‘GIS compliant’.
- Joining tables
- Labeling features
- Loading XY data tables
- Finding and querying data
- Creating a final map and printing
Prerequisites and Recommendations
Participants should know how to use windowing software. No previous mapping experience is required. Knowledge of the kinds of data used for reporting and analysis at DHSS desirable. Basic knowledge of Excel, Access and relational data are a plus.
Applied GIS in Public Health (all day course)
Overview
This course provides hands-on examples of GIS applications in the Public Health field. Users will use skills learned in Introduction to GIS in Public Health, as well as new techniques, to complete exercises from a variety of settings.
Audience
This class is for users who understand the specifics of how the GIS software works. This class is most effective when the user has been using GIS software.
